Facial Steaming- Why We Need More, How it Helps our Skin

Writer: Divine Fayerie Divine Fayerie

This has been done for generations, why is it only gaining popularity now? and why has this ancient practice been lost?

I think the big thing to look at within the skin care industry is control. We are told things by the industry, having them shoved down our throats as to what we need for our skin. Again I always come back to that old ticking clock of my intuition, and in the background it has been screaming at me since childhood. I went with the intuition on this one.

I have always had sensitive skin making it very difficult for me to use ANY commercial and chemical laden products at the store.

Even if I did find so called natural products they still have chemicals in them with fancy names you can’t pronounce. Marketing is genius when it comes to tricking us into buying things

So when ladies go to a spa sometimes they will get a facial steam. But did you know this is simple to do at home without an expensive spa visit! What does it all mean, first off let’s take a look.

What are the benefits of face steaming

  • promotes blood circulation on face which enhances glow

  • helps to clear clogged pores

  • removes blocked sebum

  • helps with better absorption of other skincare products

  • hydrates the skin

  • great for people with oily acne prone skin

  • a calming ritual and stress relief using aromatherapy

So this is why I have gained a bit of a fascination with facial steaming and the history of Ayurvedic medicine and skin care. I fell down this rabbit hole as a teenager and have adopted a lot of this practice into my herbal skincare products I make and use myself.

Ayurveda translates as 'science of life' and has been a traditional treatment in India for over 5,000 years. The belief is that our mind, body and spirit are intrinsically linked by three energies - pitta, kapha and vata - that flow within us. Optimum health and wellbeing occurs when these three energies, or 'doshas', are in balance

The traditional Ayurvedic beauty rituals were:

  • Abhyanga:

This indicates warm oil massages. It can nourish and protect the skin, promoting relaxation and rejuvenation.

  • Swedana:

This is a herbal steam bath. This ritual can detoxify and soften the skin, preparing it for further treatments.

  • Lepa:

In this ritual, herbal face masks are applied on the skin. These masks can hydrate, brighten, and balance the skin, leaving it radiant and healthy-looking.

When you start to see how using plants and natural medicines for your skin are so easy you wonder why you would buy these expensive chemical concoctions from the store!

Facial steaming has become a new exciting ritual in my life so I wanted to share! I do really love that it helps open up our pores and prepare our skin for herbal face masks.

I am in the process of creating a whole line of botanical face steams to go with my herbal face masks available right here at Divine Fayerie. So stay tuned……
